I started with a 1985 Mercedes Benz 300SD with the bullet-proof 3.0 Liter inline 5 cylinder turbo-charged diesel. It has 250K miles and going strong. My 'Mentor', who had done one other conversion last year, converted his '85 300D Turbo this year. He helped me out a lot during this conversion. Thanks Tom! (The above photo is before I tinted the windows- it really looks nice with window tint.)

This is a picture of the driver's side engine compartment before modifications were made. I had very little real-estate to work with.
(By the way, you can click on the photos to zoom in.)

Heat exchanger on left - heated filter right - fully plumbed with Dayco Gen II 1/4" ID Fuel Injection Line, biodiesel rated and cheaper than Viton.

Heat Xchanger before welding. The can is a used GM A/C receiver drier. They can be obtained for free from your local A/C shop. There is 20-some feet of Aluminum tubing rolled on a mandrel and stuffed inside. Bungs were turned and threaded, then welded on.

View of the area where the valves were to be installed. Again, very little real-estate. I used a Makita right-angle drill with a whacked-off drill bit to squeak into the spring tower. The holes were then tapped and the valve plate bolted in place.

Switch valves - kinda cramped huh? Notice small spacers between each valve. You can also see the Hose-In-Hose (HIH) terminations (3/4" 'T's) from this view.

HIH under passenger seat loooking back - holes needs to be filled in with RTV yet.

Finished tank. Notice pink foam behind tank. The tank is now almost completely 'wrapped' in 2" pink foam. Also, an upgrade since this photo; after both Tom & I had trouble (my sweeties were stranded on the interstate :-( ) I installed a little plastic fuel filter strapped to the brass T for heat. That keeps the chunkies out of the switch valves. (Mostly Al flakes from the tank fab. & welding process.)
