New WiFi Distance World Record.

A team of college students participating in this year's Defcom WiFi Shootout
contest in the US has smashed its own world record for the longest distance
unamplified WiFi connection. Team iFiber Rewire achieved an unamplified 11Mbps
connection over a distance of 124.9 miles for three hours between Las Vegas,
Nevada and Utah Hill, Utah. Making 11,000 successful pings during that time,
the group more than doubled its previous best distance.

WiFi allows computers to talk to each other without the need for connecting
cables. The technology is often used in business offices or the home to create
wireless computer networks but its range is usually limited to less than 100m.

However, thanks to some ingenious homebrew equipment, Team iFiber Rewire has
extended the technology's range beyond what was previously thought possible.
The equipment the record holders used for the feat included a collection of
homemade antennas, surplus 12 foot satellite dishes, home-welded support
structures, scaffolds, ropes and computers.

The winning team now intends to publish information on how to build the
equipment needed to achieve 100-mile-plus WiFi connections. Visit the website
