Low-bandwidth digital voice

OK,

For something completely different, I have been making
phone calls where the path between two Asterisk PBXs is
GPRS. The GPRS channel is not symmetrical.

Just when I was wondering how to tweak things to fit
the bandwidth, I see that the Asterisk 1.2 version
has a handy codecs.conf file.

Even without special tweaking, I actually can listen
to voicemail from a GPRS connected laptop using speex.

The next interesting step is to see if I can get
IAX2 UDP packets between two ID-1 radios using
their ethernet interfaces....
